New state laws pave the way for using gold as legal tender
Several U.S. states—including Missouri, Texas, Florida, and Arkansas—have passed new laws recognizing gold (and sometimes silver) as legal tender. These laws allow states to set up systems for people to use gold in everyday transactions, often through digital platforms or gold-backed debit cards. The movement is fueled by inflation concerns and distrust in the U.S. dollar.
Companies like Glint Pay already offer gold-backed payment options, and state partnerships with such firms are becoming more viable. Critics, however, warn that capital gains taxes and regulatory gaps could limit practicality. While previous efforts were mostly symbolic, new technology may now make these laws more functional.
